Almost a year after the release of BlackBerry’s BBM for Android and iPhone devices, the Canadian firm has now announced that it has begun rolling out its in-demand messenger on the Windows platform.

“BlackBerry’s popular instant messaging app, BBM, is now available to download for Windows Phone 8 and higher, highlighting BlackBerry’s continued dedication to offering multi-platform capabilities and value-add services,” the firm said in a media statement.

The statement said that BlackBerry has collaborated with Microsoft to bring BBM to Windows Phone 8 and higher.

Earlier last week, the Canadian company had made the announcement on its blog [https://blogs.blackberry.com/2014/07/download-bbm-windows-phone/]. “After a short run in private beta, I’m happy to announce that BBM for Windows Phone is being publicly released to the Windows Phone store in beta starting today,” Donny Halliwell, BlackBerry’s Social Media Marketing lead and Editor for the Inside BlackBerry blogs, wrote in it.

“To see which of your friends have recently joined BBM, go to ‘Suggestions’ on the ‘Invites’ tab within the app. Welcome to the BBM party, Windows Phone users!,” Halliwell wrote.

“Designed specifically for the Windows Phone platform, the BBM app will build on the collaboration, privacy and security features that are at the core of the BBM experience and already enjoyed by more than 85 million monthly active users around the world,” the statement noted.

In fact, Microsoft has been trying to grow its OS’ market share recently by adding new voice and chat features, including upgraded applications from Facebook and Viber besides the BBM app.

Beginning this week, Windows app store users can download Version 5.3 of the Facebook app which has integrated messaging and the ability to upload videos. Also available now (beginning Monday) is Version 4.2 of the Viber app, which boasts of the ‘hold and talk’ feature, allowing users to send instant voice messages.

“We are intent on bringing the most popular application experiences to Windows Phone, and with BBM, we are pleased to bring many of its top features to the Windows Phone platform,” said Bryan Biniak, Vice-President and General Manager, Developer Experience, Microsoft.

“BBM on Windows Phone brings our customers the secure, easy-to-use messaging experience they demand, and we expect that new features will roll out in the months to come.”

The Viber and the BBM beta are compatible with Windows Phone 8.1 and 8, while the Facebook app also works with Windows Phone 7.5.

“As the popularity of BBM continues to grow, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to expand its availability to the Windows Phone community,” said John Sims, President Global Enterprise Services at BlackBerry.

“The BBM app for Windows Phone shows our commitment to supporting cross-platform capabilities, and we are excited to be working with Microsoft to deliver a new level of collaboration to the Windows Phone platform.”

Windows Phone 8 users can download BBM and gain access to features, including BBM Chats, BBM Groups, Find Friends, BBM Feeds, and ‘Pin’ to Start.
