The Federal Traffic Council on Saturday recommended that reckless drivers be jailed for a period not exceeding 24 hours, according Major-General Mohammad Saif Al Zaffin, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police.

Previously, in a bid to reduce fatalities on the road the council had recommended that motorists driving at speeds exceeding 50 per cent of the speed limit be arrested.

Reckless driving accounts for more than 30 per cent of fatal traffic accidents across the country, while speed alone resulted in about 70 per cent of traffic-related deaths, he was quoted as saying by Al Bayan.

Maj-Gen Zaffin said, as per the recommendation reckless motorists will be held at the police station responsible for the area in which they are caught violating the traffic rule.

Guardian training

In yet another recommendation, the council recommended that a system be established where parents are entitled to train their children to drive a vehicle, provided the guardian has been driving for more than two years and has committed no traffic violations or accidents.

The council also recommends the activation of the article in the federal law, making policemen who catch motorists flouting traffic rules eligible to issue violation fines.

Another suggestion put forth by the council is with regards number plates. When a vehicle is sold to a new owner, the old number plate should be written off.
