Four brothers who clubbed to death a police officer in 2008 were sentenced to death by Kegalle High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundara in Sri Lanka.

The Island newspaper reports the murder of  a sergeant attached to the Kegalle police took place in 2008.

The sergeant and three policemen had been raiding illicit liquor manufacturers, when the brothers clubbed him to death.

Police spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody revealed that the convicts had carried out a daring attack on the police on November 16, 2008, by using clubs, while the victim and three other police constables, Rajapakse, Ranasinghe and Ranasinghe, were on a special raid in Hiriwatuna in the central province.

He said that of the four murder convicts, only one had gone to school and therefore he was called by villagers as ‘Iskolaya’. The murder convicts are Pathirathnehelage Podiralahami (60), P. Jayasekara Banda (35), P. Jayathilake (47) and P. Sunil Jayaratne alias ‘Iskolaya’ (42).
