The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi announced the introduction of the first Mawaqif "Park and Ride" service in Al Bateen area, located near the UAE Central Bank in Al Bateen.

The new free shuttle service will transport commuters from the free parking areas to nearby buildings.

The initiative is in line with DoT's mission to ensure the availability of free parking spaces to residents and visitors in congested areas within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The service will compliment the Mawaqif paid parking network in Al Bateen vicinity composed of 235 parking spaces and representing 27 per cent of the total parking spaces in the area. The "Park and Ride" service will be operational from 6:00am to 5:00am - Sundays to Thursdays and it targets visitors and employees of Al Bateen district.

Najib Al Zarooni, general manager of Parking at the DoT highlighted the positive impact Mawaqif and "Park and Ride" will have on the high traffic synonymous with the Al Bateen region and said: "These services were created to serve the community and make commuting and parking in congested areas much easier for commuters, by simply parking in the free-of-charge zone and getting a free ride to their nearby destination."

"By providing these facilities, we will be able to reduce the number of cars in that area, encourage people to use public transport and in turn contribute to a more sustainable and greener Emirate," added Al Zarooni.
