Airbags to protect falling smartphones

Published

US: A traditional airbag in a vehicle is supposed to cushion a passenger's head as it is thrust forward. While an airbag in a smartphone, yes, now even they are out, uses motion sensors to detect a dropped phone while it is in air and the mini airbag is deployed before it hits the floor.

US technology giant Amazon has come up with the sensor technology to save the smartphones from complete disaster.

Amazon has copyright of the technology and it has been patented for mobile phones, electronic readers such as Amazon's own Kindle, computer tablets and cameras, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

The complicated system onvolves using the device's gyroscope, camera, accelerometers and other sensors to determine if the device has entered an airborne state.

"This sounds like a feature worthy of Bond, codename SOS SMS. But airbags for windbags sounds like a lot of hot air to me. From a logistical point of view, the handset would have to be rather bulky to hide an airbag," said Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.com.
