The UAE Ministry of Economy has begun the callback of 2,910 Porsche Cayenne SUVs from the UAE market.

Dr Hachim Al Nuaimi, Director of Consumer Protection Department, Ministry of Economy, was quoted as saying, “Among these cars there are 1,810 vehicles that belong to A l Naboodah Motors and 1,100 cars from Ali & Sons Group.”

Porsche AG is recalling nearly 102,000 of its top-selling Cayenne SUVs worldwide to fix a potential problem that could result in a headlight coming loose or falling off.

The vehicles were built for the model years 2011 and 2012 and made sometime between March 2010 and January 2012, Porsche spokesman Steve Janisse said on Friday.

The headlights on the models are secured by a twist lock. If the lock is not secure, a headlight could fall, especially when a driver is rapidly accelerating or braking heavily when rounding a corner.

Al Nuaimi said: “The ministry contacted the two dealerships yesterday after the announcement that Porsche was withdrawing 100,000 Cayenne models all over the world.”

He added that repairs to the installation system of the front lights were the main problem.

Talks with Nissan, Lexus dealers

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Economy will discuss with Arabian Autombiles and Al Masood Automobiles - dealers of Nissan and Lexus vehicles in the UAE - about the defects observed in some of their models.

'Al Ittihad' reported that the step follows after their parent companies withdrew thousands of cars worldwide. Nissan recalled 250,000 vehicles worldwide because of a defected pressure sensor that may cause fuel leak.

According to reports, the company is expected to withdrew seven models including Infinity Patrol, Tida and Micra in different countries.

Similarly, the ministry will meet with Al-Futtaim Motors to discuss a problem recently seen in one of Lexus 400 cars in the UAE to ensure if the incident was restricted to just that car or whether it would effect all other cars of the same model on the roads.

The minister said if defects were noticed dealers will be advised to recall all vehicles within 24 hours. And agents will be given 15 days to fix the defect.

Meanwhile, about a fifth of the recalled Porsche vehicles are in the US and Canada.

Woldwide, there have been 39 cases where a headlight has come loose and 68 cases where it detached, Janisse said.

About half of all Porsche sales last year came from the Cayenne model.

This is the biggest callback of cars in the history of the company, according to a German news agency yesterday.
