EgyptAir cancels flight to Damascus due to security

EgyptAir cancelled its Friday flight to Damascus because of deteriorated security at the airport and a breakdown in communication with its office there, an official with the national carrier said on Thursday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they received reports of fighting around the Syrian capital's airport, and the carrier could not send a flight without communicating with its Damascus office.

He said they were waiting for more information before deciding whether to suspend further flights.

Flights to Damascus and Aleppo had left on Thursday, he added.

Swathes of Syria are embroiled in a bloody civil war between President Bashar al-Assad's forces and an armed opposition that has killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.
