Emirates hikes fuel surcharge

Emirates airline said it has increased fuel surcharge with effect from today due to higher oil prices.

“Due to the current volatility of oil prices, Emirates is amending its fuel surcharge, effective July 1, 2014. This is to reflect the substantial recent increases in our fuel costs. Emirates has already incurred significant costs by absorbing the recent price rise and the surcharge gives us the ability to respond faster to market conditions, rather than a lengthier process of incorporating them into fares,” an Emirates spokesperson confirmed to Emirates 24|7.

Emirates airline announced 10.2 per cent increase in fuel costs in its 2013-2014 financial report, amounting to Dh30.7 billion compared to Dh27.8 billion in the previous year. The Dubai-based carrier’s jet fuel cost contributed 39.2 per cent of the total operating cost of Dh78.3 billion.

The International Air Transport Association (Iata) last month said it expects airlines to spend $212 billion (Dh778 billion) on jet fuel this year, which is equivalent to 30 per cent of their total operating cost.

The Emirates airline spokesperson said: “We will review the level of the surcharge on an on-going basis, while remaining committed to providing our customers with excellent service and a strong value-for-money proposition.”

The airline, however, didn’t disclose how much it increased the surcharge.

Australian magazine MICEBTN reported on its website that Emirates airline and Aussie carrier Qantas are hiking fuel surcharge on their joint network.

It said services to Europe and North Africa will increase to A$285 (~Dh1,000) per sector in economy class, A$385 (~Dh1,350) for premium economy and A$540 (~Dh1,900) for business/first. Flights to the Middle East will attract surcharges of A$180 (~Dh625) one-way in economy and A$315 (~Dh1,100) for premium economy, business and first class fares.
