Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Metro Company (JMC) has started receiving pre-qualification bids from a number of consortiums for a project to construct ports and quays for the planned ferry and marine taxi services, a Saudi newspaper reported on Thursday.

The Arabic language daily Al Madina said JMC has asked all interested contractors to submit their bids for the project design, construction, procurement and maintenance.

It said the company set June 14 as a deadline for bidding and quoted a statement as saying JMC “has the right to cancel any bid at any time.”

The paper quoted JMC’s CEO Osama bin Ibrahim Abdo as saying the company is seeking contractors who have experience in marine civilian engineering work and in the operation of ferries and marine taxis.

He said the project involves the construction of quays, ferry stations, fuel depots, mooring systems, breakwaters and other facilities.

Al-Madina said the ferry service is part of the 45-billion-riyal (12 billion dollar) public transport project which also includes a metro and bus transport services in the Western Red Sea port, Saudi Arabia’s second largest city after the capital Riyadh.
