Marka, the first public joint stock company focused on the fast growing retail sector in the UAE, today announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Nick Peel as Chief Executive Officer.

Peel joins Marka from the leading European developer and manager of designer outlets, McArthur Glen, where he held the position of UK Country Manager, with responsibility for a turnover in excess of £600 million (Dh3.6 billion) and more than 200 brands.

Prior to that, Peel held the position of Retail Director of Arsenal Football Club and member of the Senior Operating Board, where he was in charge of Arsenal’s retail, wholesale, merchandise, licensing, and brand direction and played an integral role in driving Club’s global super-brand status. While at the Club, Peel was responsible for growing retail revenues at 30 per cent in 24 months, and growing global licensing revenues by over 50 per cent via creation and execution of a worldwide master franchise licensing programme.

Peel spent an extended time at Land Securities Group plc, the largest commercial property company in the UK and part of the FTSE 100 Index on the London Stock Exchange. As the Head of Property Management and Retail Operations, he was responsible for Land Securities portfolio of 17 shopping centres and 16 retail parks in the UK with asset value in excess of £3 billion.

He also was part of the executive management of the Rangers Football Club as the Retail and Brand Director.

“I am delighted to announce Nick Peel as the CEO of Marka. He brings the strategic multi-channel retail, operations, brand and commercial experience to establish Marka as the region’s premier retail and hospitality operator,” said Jamal Al Hai, Chairman of Marka.

“Nick is a retail executive with over 20 years of experience, the majority gained in senior management and board level positions at leading retail and sports brands.”

The company will begin trading on the DFM in September.
