Sharjah International Airport passenger traffic increased 6.11 per cent to 2.4 million during the first quarter of 2015 as compared to 2.25 million in the same period last year, helped by new airlines and the expansion of Air Arabia.

A statement said that it was the busiest quarter ever for the airport.

The aircraft movements in Q1 2015 also registered an increase of 3 per cent to 16,865 movements compared to 16,373 movements in the same period last year. The freight handled for the same period of this year recorded 42,987 tons, and the Sea-Air Cargo recorded 4,564 tons, which was hit by the global economic slowdown.

The passenger and aircraft movement increase was attributed to new airlines commencing operations from Sharjah International Airport in addition to the additional frequencies made by existing carriers, especially by Air Arabia.

Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority, said as the numbers clearly suggest, robust passenger traffic growth continues driven by the strategic location of Sharjah International Airport within UAE.

He mentioned that the ongoing projects carried out by Sharjah Airport Authority will continue to drive the commercial activities of the various business partners operating at the airport and will increase the capacity of the airport.
