A UAE company is among 12 foreign firms bidding for the operation of a new airport in Iraq’s southern Dhi Qar province, its governor was quoted on Sunday as saying.

Yeha Al Nasiri said the governorate would award the contract to operate its first civilian airport within the next three months.

“We have received offers from 12 companies to invest in the project and operate the airport in Nasiriyah. We will likely complete procedures for awarding and operation within three months,” Yehya Al Nasiri told Al Nasiriyah news network.

He said the companies are specialised in aviation and include firms from the UAE, the United States and Turkey but he did not identify any of them.

Al Nasiri said the contract of the operating companies includes furnishing the airport terminals, organisation of daily work and operation of air traffic.

Dhi Qar officials said this month the new airport is located at Imam Ali military air base and would be commissioned in early 2015.The Nasiryah airport and similar other projects in conflict-battered Iraq have been on the cards for more than four years but they have been held up by security problems and delayed transport ministry approval.
