In its efforts to achieve the Smart Dubai Initiative, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has announced that it is making use of Microsoft HoloLens, the world’s first self-contained holographic computer to enhance its operations, improve productivity, accelerate innovation and provide best quality of efficient services to its customers.

The Smart Dubai Initiative was launched by Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to transform the Emirate into the smartest city in the world.

"In adherence with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, to take the governmental services to the next level, we adopted the Microsoft HoloLens technology (3D Mixed Reality technology), which works as an independent computer with graphs and 3D display processors, and user movement sensors, which enables the employees to have 3D vision. They can interact with the images displayed, the matter which embodies our efforts to support innovation, and contribute to achieving the goals of Dubai Plan 2021 ensuring that Dubai Government is a distinguished and leading government," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

"This move makes DEWA the world’s first service utility to adopt this technology, driving digital transformation within the entity, and contributing to its global position as one of the largest and most efficient utilities, while achieving the happiness of its customers and stakeholders. DEWA always works on developing its processes through the adoption of the state of the art technologies in all fields. What more, it seeks to take the lead by adopting the new innovative ideas and solutions, to sustain its position as a model role for other local, regional and international utilities in technological development, digital transformation and enhancing services levels," Al Tayer added.

"DEWA has always been spearheading innovation in its mission towards achieving the Smart Dubai Initiative in accordance with the Dubai Plan 2021, and we are committed to supporting them in this journey. We will continue to innovate and enable digital transformation around personal computing, the intelligent cloud, productivity and businesses processes, in order to empower the government to achieve more," said Samer Abu Ltaif, Regional General Manager, Microsoft Gulf.

The Microsoft HoloLens enables new ways to create, communicate and work, providing a holographic and scenario oriented view of the DEWA Smart Grid. DEWA will take advantage of HoloLens to visualise their Smart Power Plant, provide an interactive 3D models for the plants’ equipment, and remote expert assistance; including access to maintenance job cards, equipment, training manuals, and other operating procedures.

Leveraged for visualisation of scenarios, consolidated information and remote maintenance of the Smart Power Plant, the HoloLens will enable DEWA to ensure rapid decision making, and manage and forecast future demand, while improving energy efficiency and reducing power consumption.
