The number of companies which hired illegal workers in Dubai dropped noticeably last year, according to a top official.

In a statement sent to the media, Major General Mohammed Al Marri, Head of Dubai’s Naturalisation and Residency Department, said that of the 165,000 companies in Dubai, there were only 281 violating workers visa.

“This is a result of the repeated awareness campaigns of the dangers of hiring illegal workers by the both DNRD and Ministry of Labour. Earlier, we used to arrest more than 40 illegal workers in any one violating firm. But now, the number has dropped dramatically,” Maj, Gen. Al Marri said.

He pointed out that last year, the total number of illegal workers arrested in different firms and companies in Dubai was 281. “Of these 281 illegal workers, 57 were working with a different person not their sponsor, 56 were working on visit visas, 54 were hiring workers who are not on their visas, and the rest were charged for running away from their sponsors, and also charged for not carrying identification.”

Statistics also showed that majority of the male violators were aged between 30 to 39 years and not married. “As for the female violators, most of them were run-away housemaids.”

“Also in the year 2013, the total numbers of residency violators and intruders was 13,943 persons, compared to 14,400 in 2014. And as for the first quarter of this year, the total numbers of residency violators and intruders reached 4,270.”
