ENBD has largest bank network in UAE

Dubai-based Emirates NBD (ENBD) maintained its position as having the largest bank network in the UAE besides its status as the largest banking unit in the region by assets, according to efficacies data.

At the end of 2011, ENBD had 115 branches across the emirates, accounting for neatly 15 per cent of the total 791 branches of the country’s 23 national banks, showed the figure by the central bank.

Dubai emerged as the main base for ENBD as it is home to 83 branches. It has 15 branches in Abu Dhabi, seven in Sharjah, three in Ras Al Khaimah, two in Fujeirah and one each in Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.

Government-controlled National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) controlled the second largest bank network in the UAE, with 86 branches at the end of 2011. They include 39 branches in Abu Dhabi and 18 in Dubai.

Dubai Islamic Bank came third with 68 branches, including 32 in Dubai and nine in Abu Dhabi. It was followed by Mashreq Bank and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, having 66 branches each, the report showed.

Abu Dhabi-based Union National Bank and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank had 54 and 45 branches each while 33 branches are controlled by Emirates Islamic Bank, 30 by the National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah, 26 by Sharjah Islamic Bank and 25 by Commercial Bank of Dubai.

The report showed the UAE had 28 foreign banks at the end of 2011, with their branches standing at 111. Standard Chartered Bank had the highest number of branches of 11 while eight braches belonged each to Arab Bank, HSBC Bank Middle East, Habib Bank A.G Zurich and United Bank.
