The Government of Dubai Media Office (GDMO) has announced the launch of Media Innovation Lab, a unique series of events focused on sharing knowledge on media innovations.

The Media Innovation Lab seeks to bring together leading experts to discuss media-related innovations that are reshaping not only the industry but also other spheres of life.

The initial series of Media Innovation Lab events will include workshops by Michael Wu, Chief Scientist at Lithium Technologies; Joyce Baz, Regional Communications Manager for Google in the Middle East; and Joel Schaeffer, a leading photographer.

Attendees at the workshops will include government officials, media professionals and media students.

Mona Al Marri, Director General of GDMO, said: “In line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai has always been early adopters of innovative new technologies and practices in every sphere of life including media. The Media Innovation Lab is aligned with the strategic priority that the UAE has placed on enhancing innovation to further raise its global competitiveness and enhance diversification.”

The UAE Government has declared 2015 the “Year of Innovation” and announced a new UAE Innovation Strategy with the aim of becoming one among the most innovative nations in the world within a seven-year period.

To be launched during the UAE Innovation Week to be held from November 22 to 28, the Media Innovation Lab will feature events every quarter.

The first Media Innovation Lab workshop by Joel Schaeffer on November 22 will discuss the latest tools and techniques for photographing extreme sports. The workshop will teach innovative ways to capture the essence of the sport.

Michael Wu’s workshops on November 23 and 25 will focus on using ‘gamification’ techniques to solve big business problems that involve long-term behavior change. ‘Gamification’ is the art and craft of using the elements of game playing like point scoring and competition in other activities like business. Wu’s talk will also feature an examination of human behavior on social media.

Joyce Baz’s workshop on November 26 will feature a survey of Google tools that support newsgathering. The workshop will help reporters, editors and producers across mediums discover new trends in search and get a better understanding for how Google Search works.  She will also explain how Google Trends can be used to generate insights on what people are searching for on Google.
