India’s SpiceJet, a low-cost carrier, on Tuesday announced launch of its two new services from Dubai.

The airline launched its maiden flights from Dubai to New Delhi and Mumbai and the youngest Indian carrier to start operations from the UAE will add seven more international destinations to its global network in the near future, said Neil Mills, Chief Executive Officer, SpiceJet.

Speaking at a press conference in Dubai, Neil said they are working to open up new routes, especially to South India. SpiceJet currently operates on two international routes, Delhi-Kathmandu and Chennai-Colombo; Dubai is the third global destination of the airline.

Neil, who earlier worked for Dubai-based flydubai, said the airline is recruiting more staff and pilot. “We have recruited 1,400 staff in four months and some of the airline staff retrenched by other major airlines joined SpiceJet.”

Air India, the country’s national carrier, operations have been marred by a protracted pilot strike that’ve reached 50 days now, helping the private Indian carriers to boost their market share by adding new flights to international routes. Earlier this week, IndiGo, a private low-cost carrier from India, announced its international expansion plans, especially for the Middle East.

“We are working to add new international destinations like South China, Maldives, Colombo, Bangkok, Riyadh and Kabul. We’re also looking to new destinations in India as well as in the GCC. Some of the destinations that we are looking to connect with Dubai are Kochi, Chennai and Hyderabad, while in the Gulf we have Saudi Arabia as new point on our radar,” Mills said.

Booking for the SpiceJet Dubai flights started with an inaugural offer fare of Dh377, excluding taxes.
