Oman’s housing ministry will shortly award a contract for Phase 2 of a new 500-million-rial ($1.3 billion) city in the northern Liwa province for the construction of the project’s infrastructure, a newspaper in the Gulf country reported on Thursday.

The Arabic language daily ‘Al Watan’ quoted the ministry as saying in a statement that it had already awarded Phase 1 for excavation work, engineering services, sewage canals and other facilities at a cost of 25 million rials ($65 million).

“The housing ministry said it would soon start procedures to award Phase 2 of the new city project in Liwa after awarding Phase 1 this year,” the report said without mentioning the winner of the first contract.
It said Phase 2 includes the construction of the project’s infrastructure involving water and power supply, roads, communications and other services.

The paper quoted the ministry as saying the project has an area of around 8 sq km and includes the building of 2,500-3,000 houses as well as eight schools, mosques, health and social centres, greening and shopping centres.

It said the project would house nearly 30,000 people and is located near Al Batinah motorway and the railway, part of the planned multi-billion-dollar rail linking the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
