Re-register car online if less than 3-years: RTA

If your Dubai driving licence or vehicle registration is up for renewal and is not older than three years, spare yourself a visit to the customer service centre; these services are no longer provided over the counter.

“When a vehicle is not older than three years, it does not need to be tested again. It is, therefore, not needed for the customer to visit the service centre; this can easily be done online or on the phone,” explains Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of Licensing at the RTA.

The same principle works for the renewal of a driving licence not older than 3 years, for which no eye test is required. The renewal can be completed without a visit to the centre.

In line with the initiative to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world, government entities are gradually shifting their focus from a face-to-face service sector to one sustained by online platforms.

Channels such as the smartphones, websites and social media sites are becoming the main communication link between authorities and the public.

The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) is among the biggest service providers and recently announced its plans to develop more than 200 new apps within the next year, covering transportation, parking, Salik or other frequently used services in support of the roadmap towards a smart city.

The launch of new applications does not immediately lead to a replacement of the services provided over the counter.

However, in the future more services may not be available at customer service centres as the aim is to move towards a smart society, indicated Bahrozyan.

“Many people in this region are used to go to a customer service desk. From a cultural point of view, people may be more comfortable to go to the counter, but we want to change this,” he said earlier.

“We now have four or five channels providing our services and we are introducing a new one, which is the mobile phone, so our customers can avail these services wherever and whenever they wish without going through the hassle of conventional procedures; an exercise poised to contribute to raising their satisfaction rating as well,” said Bahrozyan.

Currently, vehicle registration and driving license renewal can be done on the website of the RTA, and on the phone by calling 8009090. With all the details at hand, the renewal can be completed without setting foot outside.

Within a year these services will also become available as a smartphone application.

In addition, there will be dedicated kiosks at the customer service centres where the renewal can be done, explained Bahrozyan.

“The service will not be available over the counter, but it can be done at these kiosks.”
