UAE's hosting of Expo 2020 Dubai will be a success: EU official

European Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, said hosting Expo 2020 Dubai will be a test for the UAE, which has the success factors and masters the ability to host global events based on its participation in previous editions of Expo.

In a statement to WAM during his visit Sunday to the UAE pavilion at Expo Milano 2015, Vella expressed admiration of the three sub-themes of Expo 2020 Dubai - sustainability, mobility and opportunity.

Dubai is ambitious and can make the best results, he said, adding that the participation of the UAE in Expo Milano 2015 was successful and the country's successful bid to host the global event in 2020 is well-earned.

Organising the UAE pavilion at Expo Milano reflects the country's vast administrative experience and knowledge, Karmenu noted. He stressed that thanks to its global partnerships and continuous achievements, the UAE will succeed in hosting Expo 2020 which will have the central theme of 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future' to contribute towards global development.

The EU official also expressed admiration of 'Family Tree', a short film forming the centerpiece of the UAE pavilion in Milan. The film shows how Emirati forefathers coped with scarce water and resources before the discovery of oil in 1963 and underlines the importance of sustainability for future generations.

Building the future, Karmenu said, requires global joint action because future issues are global in scope. "Water, for instance, is a global issue and in order to reach a global solution to this issue, we need international cooperation."
