BP Sharjah Limited on Thursday delivered a 40% stake in the Sajaa oilfield to the Government of Sharjah after the end of the 35-year-interest concession in a grand ceremony attended by Sheikh Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairman of Sharjah Oil Council (SOC), at SOC's premises.

Sajaa Field was discovered in December, 1980 on Amoco's 100% working interest concession in Sharjah. The field is significant as it is both Sharjah's largest producing field and Sharjah's first gas-condensate development.

In November 1978 a petroleum concession agreement was signed between the Emirate of Sharjah and Amoco Sharjah Oil Company, allowing Amoco to explore for oil and gas in a 600,000 acre area onshore.

BP Sharjah Ltd has operated the onshore gas processing plant; LPG Terminal and Condensate Terminal on behalf of the Sharjah Government since merging with Amoco in 1999. It supplies condensate gas and liquefied natural gas to Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority and to foreign markets.
The field has reached a maximum output of 800,000 cubic feet of gas per day and 50,000 barrels per day of oil condensates.

BP today completed a smooth transfer of operations of the field to Sharjah National Oil Corporation.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairman of Sharjah Oil Council, lauded the BP for its leading role in the economic development in Sharjah, and for applying and attracting international best oil standards and expertise as well as training national oil and gas professionals.

He noted that BP had made tremendous milestones in discovery of oil and gas condensates and had set an example as an ''efficient operator''.
