Dubai's strategic game-plan as global hub for green economy

Dubai Supreme Council of Energy reviews plans for positioning Dubai as global hub for green economy. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, chaired the Supreme Council’s 34th meeting held at its headquarters. During the meeting the council reviewed plans for positioning Dubai as a global hub for green economy.

"To achieve the Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a smart, integrated and connected city that uses its resources sustainably with high-tech infrastructure that supports social and economic development and to be on a par with the best cities in the world, the Supreme Council of Energy has highlighted the Smart Dubai initiative by His Highness Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The initiative is to make Dubai the smartest city in the world within three years by implementing 100 initiatives and 1,000 smart services to improve quality of life and achieve Dubai’s sustainable development," said Al Tayer.

He added: "We have also reviewed the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 and initiatives, innovations, green projects and mechanism, such as green transportation and retrofitting buildings, as well as the Shams Dubai initiative to regulate connecting electricity from solar panels in buildings with Dewa’s grid. The Supreme Council also reviewed plans for promoting the use of electric, hybrid and environment-friendly cars in Dubai to enhance Dewa’s Green Charger initiative to build the infrastructure for electric vehicles in Dubai by building 100 charging stations this year – the first such initiative of its kind in the region."

The members of the Supreme Council reviewed the UAE Water Aid initiative, which was launched by Sheikh Mohammed, to promote social services and help countries get clean drinking water. This supports the Decree No 8 for 2015, to form the committee for the UAE Water Aid initiative, which includes Dewa, the Ministry of International Cooperation and Development, Emirates Red Crescent, United Arab Emirates University and Khalifa University.

They reviewed details of a study to build a centre to hone skills of UAE nationals in sustainable energy, and research and development, in cooperation with Dewa under the umbrella of the Supreme Council and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido). This will support Dubai’s vision to become a smart city with the best clean energy, energy-efficiency and water technologies.

"The Supreme Council is currently preparing to organise workshops for government departments and organisations to study, discuss and evaluate the launch of electric and hybrid cars to reduce fuel consumption to reduce carbon dioxide emissions," said Al Muhairbi.

The meeting was attended by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy; Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary-General of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy; and other Supreme Council members including, Abdulla Kalban, MD and CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium; Saif Al Falasi, Chief Executive Officer of Enoc; Abdullah Abdel Kareem, Director-General of the Department of Oil Affairs; Salem bin Mesmar, Assistant Director-General of Dubai Municipality for Environment, Health and Safety; Waleed Salman, Chairman of Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence; Dr. Yousef Al Ali, CEO of Public Transport Agency at RTA, as well as representatives from Dubai Supply Authority.
