Siemens on Wednesday announced that it has signed a Dh400 million ($109 million) contract to build a new substation in Abu Dhabi that will help meet an increase in demand for electricity in the industrial areas of the eastern region of the emirate.

Siemens will build the Shamkha 400/132/33 kV substation on turnkey basis for Abu Dhabi Transmission & Dispatch Company (Transco), which is fully-owned by Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA), the owner of Abu Dhabi’s power generation and transmission grid.

The deal follows last year’s signing of a contract with Transco for the construction of the 400kV Mahawi substation, the first of its kind to be developed solely by Siemens in the UAE.

Siemens has been executing contracts with Transco since 1976.

he solutions offered by Siemens for the turnkey substation will consist of 400-kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), 132-kV switchgear, 33-kV switchgear, and 500MVA and 120MVA power transformers.
