Kuwait has awarded Spain’s Tecnicas Reunidas company an EPC contract to build a gas treatment unit at its Mina Al-Ahmadi oil refinery, a newspaper in the Gulf OPEC producer has reported.

State-owned Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract to the Spanish firm’s local agent Al-Ajran General Trading and Contracting, the Arabic language daily Al-Rai said.

“The company was awarded the contract after it submitted the lowest bid for the project, which will be completed within 42 months,” it said, citing KNPC sources.

The paper also quoted the sources as saying Kuwait’s central tenders committee has agreed to pre-qualify a number of global companies to bid for a project to construct a pier and LNG import units at Al-Ahmadi at cost of one billion dinars (3.3 billion dollars).

It did name those firms or provide details of that project but said it is intended to “ensure Kuwait’s needs of LNG.”

In 2014, Kuwait awarded a contract to upgrade Al-Ahmadi refinery as part of the $multi-billion clean fuel project that also involves the updating of Mina Abdullah refinery and the construction of the state-of-the-art Al-Zour refinery with a capacity of 615,000 bpd, one of the world’s largest refining units.
