Facebook has launched a new tool that will advance the security features of your account in two steps.

The new tool called Security Checkup is available only in the US, and Facebook has promised to roll it out into other markets sometime over the next few weeks.

The announcement was made over the weekend and Facebook also published a video explaining the process works.

If you happen to have logged in on unknown devices, the new security tool helps you logout remotely. "The first step helps you log out of devices you haven’t used in a while or forgot about, so you’re only logged into Facebook where you want to be," the Facebook note says.

Users can also turn on login alerts, which lets them know when someone else tries to log into the account. Facebook will send a notification via SMS or an email alert when the account is accessed from an unfamiliar device or browser.

"We want everyone to have a safe experience on Facebook. That's why we have dedicated teams and intelligent security systems working around the clock to help keep your account secure," notes Melissa Luu-Van, Product Manager at Facebook.

"We recommend not using your Facebook password anywhere else online, never sharing it with anyone, and avoiding common words that may be easy to guess," she says adding that Facebook will provide optional security controls that users can turn on for added protection.

"You'll see a reminder at the top of your News Feed. Click 'Get Started' and follow the prompts through three easy steps," she adds.
