Ford announces iPhone, 4G connectivity to all new vehicles

Automaker Ford has announced that it plans to introduce 4G LTE into all new models apart from allowing iPhone and Android users to seamlessly connect to its dashboard.

The upgrade will be rolled out into more than 13 million Ford vehicles that are equipped with Sync 3 – the latest version of software that powers its in-car infotainment system. Ford also says it plans to connect a total of 20 million users by 2020.

Currently you can connect the Ford entertainment system to any device, be it Android or Apple using the Bluetooth technology.

Ford says it is expanding its SYNC connectivity system, adding Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 4G LTE and several new AppLink that would enable users to add new apps, and even allow remote start, unlock doors, check fuel level and locate a parked vehicle via smartphone.

While the Apple CarPlay enables iPhone users access to Maps, Messages, Phone and Music through Siri voice control or touch screen, Android Auto enables easier and safer access to Google voice search, Google Maps, Google Play Music and more via steering wheel controls and touch screen.

“SYNC allows customers to bring the smartphone technology they’re comfortable with into a vehicle and use it without hassle,” said Don Butler, Ford executive director, Connected Vehicle and Services. “With SYNC, we move at our customers’ pace – making it easy for them to maintain a connected lifestyle no matter their choice of smartphone, apps or services inside and outside their vehicle.”

According to a statement released ahead of CES that is scheduled to be held in Las Vegas Ford said that the upgrades would be rolled out starting this year. But it is still unclear if vehicle in the Middle East would be part of that timeline.

The announcement specifically mentions that all Ford vehicles in North America, equipped with SYNC, will get the latest software in 2017. Owners of 2016 vehicles equipped with SYNC 3 will have an opportunity to upgrade later in the year.
