Google updates terms to state that it indeed scans your emails

It is no secret that Google has been scanning our emails. It does so specifically to push tailor made ads. In its latest update to the terms of service Google has just added a new clause that clearly indicates that it is doing so.

The latest update on April 14 states, “Our automated systems analyze your content (including emails) to provide you personally relevant product features, such as customized search results, tailored advertising, and spam and malware detection. This analysis occurs as the content is sent, received, and when it is stored.”

Microsoft as part of its “Don’t get Scroogled,” campaign has been campaigning. warning people as to why they should ask Google to stop this or else switch to outlook.com. It has even launched an online petition which has already got 216,872 signatures of the targeted 250,000 asking Google to stop reading emails.

“Not only is Google reading your Gmail to target you with ads, but now they're using that information to spam you. Google is now deliberately spamming inboxes with ads that look like real emails.

It has even posted a video – this time not on Youtube though – explaining how you get scroogled. The video ends with a note stating that Microsoft’s own “Outlook is different. We don’t scan the content of your email to target you with ads.”
