Honda, Corolla, Camry recall

Over 1,300 Honda cars in the UAE are affected in a global recall that has seen four of the world’s largest carmakers implementing a voluntary service campaign over a defect in airbags.

Toyota Motor Corporation, Honda Motor Corp and Nissan Motor Corp have all issued separate recall guidelines over concerns that a malfunctioning inflator in the airbag could inadvertently deploy the front-seat airbags or activate the automatic seat belt restraints.

Al Futtaim Motors, the exclusive distributors of Honda and Toyota in the UAE, have confirmed with Emirates 24|7 in a statement: “We can confirm that 1,337 units in the UAE are affected from the 2001 model year to the 2003 model year, across the Odyssey, CR-V, Stream and Civic.”

The distributors also confirmed that under Toyota, “certain 2001 through 2003 model year Camry and Corolla vehicles” have been recalled in the voluntary service campaign, without revealing the number of cars affected in the country or across the region.

The statement continued: “The company is working closely with Toyota Motor Corporation to determine the details of the voluntary service campaign for the UAE market.

“The vehicles are equipped with front passenger airbag inflators, which could have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant wafers.

“Improperly manufactured propellant wafers could cause the inflator to rupture and the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally in the event of a crash.”

The statement added that if the front airbag inflators in affected vehicles deploy with too much pressure, it might result in injury.

Al Futtaim Motors said it would contact customers directly for vehicle inspections and replacement of parts if required.

A statement from local reps from Nissan is awaited.

Global recall

Japanese carmaker Toyota appears to be the most affected with nearly 1.73 vehicles affected in the global recall.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the Dubai taxi fleet, which comprise several Toyota make vehicles, will be impacted by this recall.

Meanwhile, Honda has reportedly called back about 1.14m vehicles globally, while Nissan called back more than 137,000 units in Japan, the companies said in separate statements.

Toyota Motor Sales, US confirmed in a statement the safety recall involves approximately 170,000 front passenger airbag inflators installed in several vehicle models, including certain Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia, and Tundra, and the Lexus SC 430 models manufactured from 2001–2003.

More precise vehicle information is being developed, but about 510,000 vehicles may have to be inspected to locate the suspect inflators.

American Honda has also confirmed in a statement that approximately 561,000 cars have been affected in the US market, with the models affected including the Civic (between years 2001-2003), the CRV (2002-2003) and the Odyssey (2002).

In the voluntarily recall, approximately 426,000 Civic vehicles, 43,000 CRVs and 92,000 Odysseys are being recalled to replace the passenger front airbag inflator.

Honda US also confirmed it is aware of one crash in which a passenger front airbag deployed with too much pressure, causing the casing to rupture; however, the car manufacturer is not aware of any injuries or deaths related to this issue. (With inputs from wire agencies)
