Apple’s new venture into smaller sized tablets - the iPad mini - goes into production and might be ready for an October launch.

According to latest reports Pegatron, a Chinese production unit, has managed to nab a majority of 50 to 60 per cent of iPad mini orders from Apple, which was otherwise being solely assembled at Foxconn.

Meanwhile, another Chinese blog has released more leaked images of how the 7-inch iPad mini/ Nano as it is being popularly referred to.

The latest images clearly show the not so attractive and slightly thicker aluminium shell of the iPad mini. The device has two cameras, both for Facetime in front and a back camera. The port is small and in tune with the new iPhone5. A section of the press has even questioned the legitimacy of the new leaked images, calling it a mere prototype rather than a working model.

Although Apple has not publicly confirmed that it is working on a smaller version of the iPad, mainly as a competition to Samsung’s Galaxy Note, Kindle Fire and the recently launched Nexus 7 tablets.

The first set of images were leaked a few months ago and clearly indicated a 7.85-inch/4:3 display.

Apple is expected to price the mini around $299 to $350 and according to reports both Foxconn and Pagatron has the capacity to come out with at least 5 million units every month.
