Iraq’s southern Dhi Qar governorate intends to invest 500 billion dinars (USD430 million) in power projects in the next three years to add 2,000 MW to its generation capacity, an official was reported on Monday as saying.

The projects are needed to tackle a severe power shortage in the governorate due to overloading and the fact that some networks have become old, said Shanan Al Zamli, chairman of the electricity committee in the governing council.

“Dhi Qar needs to invest 500 billion dinars to develop its power sector in the next three years as the governorate is suffering from a real power generation crisis,” Zamli said, quoted by the Iraqi news network ‘Al Sumaria’.

He said the projects would add a total 2,000 MW to lift the governorate’s existing power generation capacity to nearly 3,000 MW, adding that the council had already approved a project to build a power plant north of the province’s capital Nasiriyah with a capacity of 1,000 MW.

Another 1,000-MW plant is to be constructed in Suq Al Shuyukh in south Dhi Qar, Zamli added.
