Google on Wednesday announced a major push for Android and seamless integration across multiple platforms.

Apart from a new design element, Google announced the release of over 5000 APK’s for developers to work on its new OS - Android L, to be released later this year and rolled out new platforms for TV, car and wrist watch.

Sunday Pichai, Senior Vice President, Android, Chrome and Apps was on stage making the presentation on Wednesday’s Google I/O conference and he threw up some interesting numbers about the growth of Android across key markets. Here’s the list:

He in fact began by saying that the number of female participants at this year`s I/O is up from 8 per cent last year to 20 per cent this year.

One Billion Active users

The Global smartphone shipments has grown tremendously and the numbers are stunning. While the industry shipped about 315 million smartphones last quarter, it is on track to ship well over a billion phones each year.

The number of cumulative activations of Android devices measured with a  reference point of 30 day active users has been almost doubling.

Compared to 220 million in 2012 to 520 million in 2013. This year the platform has already achieved 1 billion active 30-day users.

20 Billion Text messages

On any given day Android user send over 20 billion text messages on multiple platforms including WhatsApp, BlackBerry Messenger, LINE and others.

93 Million Selfies

Looks like Android users are pretty fond of selfies. According to Pichai they take around 93 million selfies every day of which about 31million of these are duck faces.

1.3 million Steps

“We estimate that android users take 1.3 trillion  steps per day,” said Pichai during his presentation noting the increasing number of users making use of the tracking features on their smartphones.

Phone cheks: 100 billion times

When you have 1billion active users you obviously get a big number when it comes to people checking their phones. According to Pichai, Android users take out and ckeck their phones about 100 billion times a day.

Android tablet users

It is not just the smartphone segment that has witnessed high growth numbers.

Android tablets accounted to 39 per cent of all shipments two years ago – in 2012. As far as last year`s I/O the number had increased to 46 per cent of the over all market. This year it has touched 62 per cent. The number does not factor in other variants such as Kindle.

Actual Users

While the above mentioned number caters to the total number of tablets shipped the actual user rates differs. Pichai analysed Youtube viewership and said a year ago the total tablet viewership of Youtube stood at 28 per cent from Android. That number has gone up to 42 per cent in 2014.

App installs

Another measure to measure engagement is app installs and the numbers have been increasing year after year said Pichai. This year alone it has it has increased by 200 per cent.
