Online jobs and career community Glassdoor has just announced its sixth annual Employees’ Choice Awards, which ranks the 50 Best Places to Work For in the forthcoming year.

And social media companies have invaded the Top 5 slots, which feature Twitter at No. 2, LinkedIn at No. 3 and Facebook at No. 5. The ranking of the top companies was determined by taking cumulative average ratings from the half-million employees at companies with a workforce of at least 1,000, who responded to the 18-question survey between November 14, 2012, and November 12, 2013.

The awards “recognise the best places to work each year, based entirely on employee feedback,” says the popular jobs blog. “Award winners are determined using feedback employees have shared on Glassdoor throughout the past year. Employees complete an anonymous company review survey that captures their overall job and company satisfaction, along with sentiment toward career opportunities, compensation and benefits, work-life balance, senior leadership and more,” it says.

“Unlike many workplace-related awards that require companies to self-nominate, the Glassdoor Employees' Choice Awards rely solely on employee feedback,” says the company.

And while social media companies have indeed made their mark, the top honours still go to an old-school management consulting firm, Bain & Co., which has bagged the distinction for a second time.

“Interesting, impactful work: There is rarely a boring day, much less a boring project. The problems we're solving are usually what's written in the WSJ about our – big, complicated challenges, often challenges that are leading issues for that entire industry. And my clients regularly tell me (over many years now) that they would have missed huge opportunities or never driven the required changes successfully without our help,” a current Bain & Co. employee told Glassdoor.

A Twitter employee, on the other hand, says that working at the firm has been “#Amazing since day one” (don’t miss the hashtag). “Although it is quite cliché, the people at Twitter really are what makes this place special. You are surrounded by smart, hard-working people who genuinely care about the company. You truly feel like everyone is pulling the company in the same direction. Oh, and the food is amazing too!” a Twitter salesperson told Glassdoor.

Social media giant LinkedIn too has employees echoing similar sentiments. “LinkedIn is a company that truly cares about its employees, providing opportunities for professional growth and career transformation. I look forward to coming to work every day, and feel inspired by everyone around me,” writes a software engineer.
