Saudi Arabia has launched a project to construct its first industrial city for women in its eastern province close to neighboring oil-rich Gulf countries, a newspaper in the Gulf kingdom reported on Tuesday.

The project is intended to attract investment by women in the world’s largest oil exporter and is dubbed ‘the Oasis of Ihsa cities’, ‘Al Watan’ Arabic language daily said, quoting Abdullah Al Nashwan, secretary general of Ihsa chamber of commerce and industry.

He said the city is the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia and is located near Ihsa airport, adding that all its industrial facilities would be confined to women.

Nashwan did not mention when the project was launched but said the Saudi industrial property authority (Modon) is overseeing its execution.

“Modon has gone a long way in the construction of the infrastructure for this project,” he said without giving any investment figures.
