The eight-day Gitex Shopper opened today with a buying frenzy as hundreds lined up to make way for the consumer IT industry’s biggest annual sales event.
Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts opened the show, which is expected to account for two months in sales for several retail giants that are offering killer deals across various categories, including Tablets, cameras, televisions and more.
However, laptops are still emerging as the top buy this season, with many looking to cinch the deal with the best offer on display.
Santosh Nair, who is visiting Gitex Shopper for the second time, said: “I am looking to pick up a laptop to use at home. There is no specific brand I have in mind, but rather, the deal and the bundle offer will probably sway my decision.”
Mishaal Khan, who awaits the shopper deals every year to make purchases, said: “The deals are going to be interesting this year, what with the Tablets category competing with the laptops and the newly introduced ultrabooks.
“However, I am still swaying towards the laptop, which is still the more conventional buy. HP and Toshiba are the two brands that I am looking at, but of course, the offers on other brands could entice me to look at other brands such as Lenovo and Dell.”
Ely Luvuguin is eager to snap up the Macbook Air, which she believes will be marked down, or at least offer a few bundle deals.
She said: “It is my first time at the Gitex Shopper, so I am not sure what to expect. So I simply plan to spend the day walking from stand to stand and buy the Macbook from the stand that will offer me the best deal.”
Meanwhile, retail giants are also bullish on the Tablets to fly off the stands this year.
Jackys COO Ashish Panjabi said: “The Samsung Galaxy Note launch is creating a lot of buzz this year, but there are other brands too that such as the conventional iPad that will still demand attention.
“Plus, we have deals that offer a Tablet free on the purchase of one, with the freebie falling in the Dh399-Dh899 bracket. These make great buys for the children who want a gadget to play around with.”
Emax CEO Neelesh Bhatnagar believes they are offering the best of both to their customers.
“This year, we are offering a free Tablet on the purchase of any laptop above Dh2,000,” he revealed.
“Hence, meeting the demand of laptop buyers, which is still the number one conventional buy, along with the new Carbon Tablet from India that we are launching here this year.”
When quizzed about the buzz and the anticipation this year at Gitex Shopper, Bhatnagar added: “The atmosphere on day one is great. The buzz is optimistic and the suppliers and vendors are also very charged up.
“I think every one, from retailers to shoppers, will walk away happy this year. That’s for sure.”
