Yesterday, the Samsung Galaxy S4 went on sale in Dubai, and by the looks of it, Samsung Gulf Electronics already owns bragging rights for declaring the smartphone “hot-selling”.
The Samsug Galaxy S4 3G is priced at Dh2,599 in the UAE, and the smartphone is already a big hit among customers in Dubai.
There was a mob, and we’re not kidding, that had been assembling outside the Samsung store from as early as 6.30am to snap the latest device from Samsung on Saturday, April 27, when the smartphone went on sale for general public.
The mall – and the store – doesn’t open until 10am. But that didn’t seem to deter the 100 to 150 or so eager beavers that were seen jostling for a chance to lay their hands on the new smartphone and be one of the first ones in Dubai – and the world – to own it.
When Emirates 24|7 visited the store at around 10.30am, we witnessed heated arguments between impatient fans and the store management that was clearly trying its best to organise the customers and dole out the Galaxy S4 as soon as they possibly could.
Part of the reason for the rush was Samsung store had announced a Dh444 in-store voucher for the first 200 customers and that, it was obvious, was enough to result in a flash mob assembling outside the Samsung store yesterday.
“We sold more than 250 smartphones in the first two hours,” a clearly hassled manager of the Samsung store told Emirates 24|7 when we re-visited the store after a couple of hours. There was still a queue to buy the device, despite the ‘free vouchers’ list over a long time back.
The manager had asked customers to register their interest with him, which he put on a list, and was seen ushering in people one by one, according to his list.
By 12noon, the store had run out of the 'white frost' Galaxy S4 model, and only the 'black mist' model was available, storekeepers told us.
“The turnout from our loyal consumers this weekend was fantastic; it is so encouraging to see that people in the UAE are responding well to the GALAXY S4 and we really value their dedication to be the first to get their hands on the new device,” Hayssam Yassine, Head of Telecommunications Group at Samsung Gulf Electronics, said in a statement this evening.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 was launched at the Mobile Unpacked event in New York’s Times Square on March 15, and the new device is selling fast now that it is available in stores.
With the global launch of its new spearhead smartphone in New York – a first for Samsung – the South Korean giant seems to have taken the battle for supremacy in the mobile phones domain right to arch-rival Apple Inc.’s home turf.
With the new Galaxy S4, the South Korean giant hopes to corner a more than 50 per cent market share of the mobile phone market here in the UAE.
“We have a 44.9 per cent market share of the UAE’s mobile phones market,” Young Soo Kim, President, Samsung Gulf Electronics, proclaimed in a keynote speech during the UAE launch last week.
The new Galaxy has a 5-inch screen, a 13MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, and motion-detection technology that lets users control features with face movements.
