Electronics retailer, Sharaf DG, has opened what it claims is the largest online electronics store in the region.

Nilesh Khalkho, CEO, Sharaf DG said that the new online store lists about 18,000 items. "It is several times the number of items listed on the existing largest online store."

The app for the store was launched two months ago at Gitex Shopper, while the official launch was announced Wednesday (June 17).

The online and app store will offer exclusive discounts and bundle offers that will not be available at the store.

"The objective is to promote our sales online keeping in line with the global trends. Currently, 14 per cent of all electronics sales globally are done online. In this region, the penetration is less than 5 per cent.

"We hope to achieve the 14 per cent target in about two years," said Khalkho.

Users can either schedule to pick up their online orders directly from one of the retail stores or opt for home delivery.

The delivery is however not free and costs Dh14 additional per order.

"Within the UAE it will take us three working days to fulfill the delivery, whereas it could take upto seven days across the GCC," he said.

Sharaf DG has also revamped the existing store at Times Square.

Shoppers are welcomed by a video wall, which can display six times 4k resolution.

Inside the store are three vending machines, with one each for laptops, mobile phones and cameras, facilitating instant payment and delivery of products.

The store claims that the vending machines are the largest in the world. They operate with robotic arms that move in and out picking stock.

There are zones for shoppers to experience the products, including video games, cameras and laptops.

"All Sharaf DG staff now carry a tablet that can help them enfage with customers, search for products, invoice them and also collect payments," says Khalkho.
