Where do I find the perfect housemaid?

Can somebody come up with the secret ingredients of making a housemaid happy and hard working?

Every time I talk to someone, I don’t know how but the conversation turns around and we end up talking about housemaids.

I talk to my colleagues at work, and they start complaining about their housemaids. I talk to my sister, and she starts telling me stories about her colleagues at work and how good or terrible their maids are.

I talk to my mother-in-law or my mother, and they also start complaining about their housemaids and that they don’t get proper food or service, or that the maid is not clean. This I believe is the hot topic discussed by national and non-national housewives.

I will share a funny, but irritating story with you. One of my Indian colleagues at work had an Indian housemaid from her city in India. The day she went to pick her up from airport, she was excited and said now she will enjoy having 'chapati' every morning and she will be relieved from cooking.

When her 35-year-old maid arrived, she said she doesn’t know how to make 'chapati' and my colleague ended up making 'chapati' for her husband, son, and the housemaid.

Another colleague said her housemaid never wakes up on time, which is around 6.30am to prepare breakfast for the family before they go to work. She sleeps till 9am and it is very difficult to wake her up. She will have to call her more than 20 times in order for her to wake up.

One of my friends who is married for the past four years has changed her maid three times so far. She is unhappy with the new maid also.

Of course, I don’t want to generalise. There are good and hard-working housemaids, too. But unfortunately, only a few of them, it seems.

The cost one has to pay to get a housemaid is high. For nationals, I believe its Dh6,000 to the agent, Dh1,500 to the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department, and Dh400 for the fitness checkup, plus the food and lodging costs.

Here I don’t talk about the big families. I talk about small families of young couples with one or two children only, and majority of them living in a small villa or apartment. When the housemaids arrive, they are friendly and hard working.

They will always answer with a smile and offer to do things on their own. Once the guarantee period of about three months from the agent is over, the majority of them start showing their true colors.

No one really knows the secret of how to keep their maids happy, and at the same time make them do their jobs in the best or - at least the expected way.

Some advise you and say don’t be too lenient with them. Be tough so they will fear you and do the required job. Others say don’t be too tough. The maid will hate you and then she may harm your children and you. There are others who say deduct from their salaries if they make any mistake or damage the stuff, or keep their salaries with you for the first few months as a guarantee.

No matter what one does, I don’t think that they will ever come up with the secret ingredients of making a housemaid happy and hard working – or for that matter, a satisfied housewife.

Maids are like watermelons - you don't know what they're like until you test them

Maids! i dont understand why people cannot do there own job at home this is the serious concern in the society the women want to loaf around, boss around instead of bending ther spines and doing there own family work which will not only keep them healthy but it would improvise there own family. such pathetic women need maids, husbands, kids, cars etc., and yet have a debate on topics where to find perfect maid. The perfect Maid is in yourself!. dig it and youll find the best maid for your home.

A wage of Dh1500 or even Dh2000 seems too little to merit the kind of loyalty required to take care of valued assets like family and home. Why not pay these workers Dh5000 or more per month so that they can really value their work? In addition, I've heard there is high unemployment among Emirati youth, especially in getting jobs in the private sector. Why not offer them jobs in homes until they find or qualify for their preferred jobs?

Just learn to do all the work by yourselves. No hassle.

Maid is a professional, not a slave. I agree with this opinion: Treat them as humans. Give them time to rest, regular food, and pay the salaries on time.

To get perfect housemaid you must be perfect housewife. Give them a clear command. Don't fight with them or deduct their salary.

We treated our helpers like family and did not allow my kids to become overly dependent. Never asked them to give more time - but often they did out of their own will. If treating them as children, they will act like children and you end up doing it all - or change people who will repeat history. If so, take a hard look at yourself and how you deal with others. It is a give and take - like a bank account, what you put in is what you get out.

If housemaids were intelligent and educated, they would not be housemaids. My experience is treat them with respect and make them a part of your family and they will give in return full. Most ladies want to be strict and very tightfaced with them and they give back the same. Treat maids as a family member they would do all that you want. Command respect and your work will be done to your satisfaction, like any other help in the office.

Keep searching there are good people whose intentions are to work and give a better future to their families back home. I'm happy with the babysitters I have currently from America after 7 years of misery.

My advice to all the women is to stop expecting a lot from them, they will never do their work unless you sit next to them and that is impossible. So start looking for alternatives like I did by hiring professional people from nationalites different from those who you easily find in the country. It might be expensive, but trust me not more that the money I've lost during the past seven years.

I used to pay my maids sometimes Dh2,000 depending on their work load, but they never had less than Dh1,500 salary plus free phone cards to call their country, mobile phones, good food etc and no matter what I did for them they were never loyal to me or honest. So I decided to return them back to their agencies and they end up taking my money and their maids. I wish we were more protected against those agencies who are taking advantage of the situation to steal your money.

Thank you so much for the article, finally someone who can speak out the problems we face every single day with the house maids. I honestly could not take it anymore... it was affecting my health, my family and my marriage.

Talk about it! My mother's friend broke the record of maids. Believe it or not, she changed 33 maids in one year! Our house never had a good maid either. All our maids were either theives, lazy, not decent and liars. They all had big faults which is very worrying. My sister just gave birth and is too scared to get a maid from the past experiendces of mom, aunts, and lots of other families.

Hard working and happy are just two words that don't go together.
  • Ahmad 23 August 2010 15:15 0 0
Agents need to have strict standards when hiring a maid.

There exists no perfect housemaids, but you can create a near-perfect situation by treating others the way you like to be treated. We have full knowledge in these matters on rights and responsibilities i.e domestic assistants/employer etc in Islam, we read them and we are overwhelmed by its simplicity, equality and purity but few bother to apply it.
