Road deaths in Dubai soared by nearly 67 per cent in the first half of 2013 as a result of an increase in accidents despite an ongoing drive by the emirate to attain a zero death target in the long term, police data showed on Thursday.

The figures showed 82 people were killed and 1,086 injured in 743 traffic accidents in the first half of 2013 compared with 49 deaths and 665 injuries in 665 mishaps in 2012.

“There was an increase in accidents and this resulted in more casualties as more than two vehicles were involved in some of those accidents this year,” Dubai’s traffic chief Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin said.

He said private cars committed most of the accidents as they were responsible for 513 road crashes this year, resulting in the death of 53 people.

Light trucks and mini buses caused 47 accidents, resulting in six deaths while motorcycles were involved in 51 accidents that killed two people.

Zafin said males remained the key causers of road mishaps as they were involved in 643 accidents in the first half of this year, resulting in the death of 74 people.

A breakdown showed Pakistanis topped the list of drivers causing accidents as they were involved in 159 crashes that killed 19 people. They were followed by Indians who caused 153 accidents in which 15 people were killed. Emiratis came third as they were responsible for 146 accidents in which 12 people died.
