15 years jail for drug carrier caught in Dubai

A Thai transit passenger, who was found guilty a Dubai court of carrying 1.5kg of cocaine in a secret pocket made at the bottom of her hand bag, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

SN, 32, was also ordered to pay a fine of Dh200,000 and to be deported after serving her jail term.

According to the records, a customs officer suspected SN when she arrived at Dubai Airport on November 11 at 10pm.

First Corporal Asma Adullah, 25, testified that her colleagues who suspected the transit passenger assigned her to search SN.

“Searching her body, I did not find any illegal substances on her. However, searching her bag, I noticed an abnormal thickness in its bottom. The scanning machine also indicated drugs at the bottom of the bag. Removing a plastic cover at the bottom of the bag, we found a packet that contained cocaine. The accused initially denied knowing anything about it but later confessed to possessing 1.583kg of the drug.

The prosecution had asked the court to stiffen the penalty against the accused.
