3 on India flight with 128kg poppy seeds

Authorities commend major drug bust

Custom inspectors at the Abu Dhabi International Airport have foiled an attempt to smuggle of huge quantity of poppy seeds, weighing 128.2kg.

They suspected three passengers on a flight that arrived from India.

When subjected to the inspection, 52 bags of poppy seeds weighing 52kg were found with the first suspect, an Indian national.

The second and third suspects, both Indians, were found with 35.1kg and 41.1kg of the same drug.

The three accused were referred to the competent authority.

Hamad A Hurr Al Suwaidi, Chairman of the Department of Finance, praised the vigilance of the custom personnel at the airport to foil all attempts to smuggle drugs and banned materials.

Ahmed Saeed Al Mohairi, Director General of Customs, also lauded the efforts of the custom personnel in keeping the danger at bay.
