4 years for woman took marijuana for headache

A 24-year-old Iranian businesswoman, SF, was sentenced to four years in jail followed by deportation for consuming and possessing 6.11 grams of marijuana by the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance.

The convict had admitted to the charge when she appeared before the court and claimed that a herbal medicine practitioner had prescribed it to her for treatment of headache.

According to the records, following a tip-off about SF, 24, possessing and taking drugs, police arrested the woman in a hotel in Palm Jumeirah on April 14.

Police confiscated small amounts of marijuana in the businesswoman’s car and house.

Corporal Juma Kareemi testified that the accused admitted before him to smuggling marijuana from her country by hiding it in her cosmetics. She admitted to doing this 10 times in the past. 

She also admitted to the policeman that she gives marijuana to her friends as well.

However, her urine test was negative.

The woman admitted before the court to possessing and consuming marijuana and said she had brought it from Iran for personal use.

The judge asked her: “Since when are you taking marijuana?”

The accused answered: “Two years”.

However, she denied smoking marijuana on a daily basis and said that she smoked it only when she got a headache, which could be once in a month.

“A herbal medicine practitioner had prescribed it to me for headache,” the accused told the jury, when asked if anyone had given the drugs to her.

The judge asked her if she had any medical prescription.

“No, your honour, it was not a doctor but a herbal specialist,” she replied.

When asked how her urine test had proved negative to drugs, the accused replied she had not taken marijuana for the past two months.

“The last time I took it for headache relief was in my country two months before I came to the UAE,” she answered.
