Two Pakistanis were sentenced to ten years in prison for possessing 5.4kg of heroin in 704 capsules for sale.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance also ordered IH, 55, driver, and MB, 45, businessman, to pay fines of Dh50,000 each and to be deported after serving their jail terms.

According to the records, police received a tip off that IH was to receive a large quantity of drugs from an unidentified person and that he will store the narcotics until getting further instructions.

“We investigated the information and on July 8, 2013, we prepared a trap to arrest the suspect and the one who was to hand over the drugs to him,” testified Major Obaid Saif.

IH was seen waiting behind labour accommodations in Muhaisna at around 9.30pm. A man came and handed over a big bag to the suspect. Policemen rushed to the scene but could arrest only one of them as the other one ran away.

When policemen approached them, they threw the bag aside.

IH, who was standing with the bag next to him, initially denied knowing anything about the bag.

Other staff ran after the deliverer, a police officer said.

“Searching the area, I saw a man hiding in a truck. I could see part of his head. When I opened the door of the truck, he jumped out of the other door and ran towards a sandy area. I ran after him and caught him,” testified Sergeant Subhi Yousef.

Later, IH gave up denying and told police that he had received a phone call from Pakistan and his compatriot had asked him to meet businessman MB to receive heroin from him. “I was supposed to hand the heroin over to a Pakistani who would transport it to Saudi Arabia,” he said.

IH later changed his story and told investigators that he was supposed to transport the drugs to Saudi Arabia himself. He admitted to doing that for compensation of Dh12,000 per kg. He also admitted this was the third time that he was transporting drugs.

In the court, the two denied the accusation and the court decided to appoint defence lawyers for the accused and adjourned the case.
