Major General Abdul Jalil Mahdi Al Asmawi, director- general of Dubai's anti-drug operations denied that a narcotic substance that tastes like strawberry was found in some schools in Dubai.

Asmawi said he is hearing this for the first time and urged promoters of such rumours to help the government’s fight against drugs by calling 800400400 or 04-266 1816. He also said awareness campaigns against drugs will continue in state schools and universities.

However, this does not mean there is no penetration of some schools by drug dealers. Sometimes they succeed in recruiting a weak student and through him try to promote drugs among his friends, he added.

He pointed out that only some drugs like ‘Tramadol’ and ‘Keptagon’ are being promoted in schools.

Major General Al Asmawi called on parents and school administrators, teachers and students themselves to report any suspect attempt to promote narcotics among school children.

He also called on students not to respond to promoters of narcotics and also to report anyone trying to lure them to the world of drugs.

He stressed that the government will handle all information in strict confidence with no legal obligations for the informer.

Major General Al Asmawi said there were five cases of drug abuse among school students last year.  In all the cases, parents were informed to get their children medically treated. Promoters of drugs were tracked down, arrested and brought to justice.

Major General Al Asmawi called on school administrators to organise awareness campaigns for the benefit of the students.
