Abu Dhabi traffic police seized 66 cars after they were caught doing more than 200 km per hour in the first quarter of 2012, according to police.

All the speeding vehicles were caught on motorways linking Abu Dhabi city with Dubai, the eastern town of Al Ain and Ghuweifat near the Qatari-Saudi border.

“Those vehicles were impounded for reckless driving…traffic police have instructions to get tough against speeding motorists,” said Major Mohsen Al Minhali, director of the external roads section at the Abu Dhabi traffic police.

He told the Arabic language daily police patrols have been intensified on speedways as part of the 2010 road safety strategy aimed at cutting accidents and reducing deaths on the emirate’s roads.
