Cop who siphoned off Dh300,000 behind bars

An Arab policeman has been sentenced to one-year in jail followed by deportation for embezzling at least Dh300,000 of public funds.

Abu Dhabi Criminal Court ordered him to return the cash and fined him Dh300,000, reported 'Al Ittihad'.

According to Prosecution records, the policeman hacked the electronic system at his workplace and tampered with the 'leave allowance' data of employees first.

Then he called them up to say that due to a technical error additional amount had been transferred to their accounts, and that he was asked by authorities to pay the deficit amount.

He requesed them to refund the 'extra' amount and help him. He allegedly even went to the victims' houses to collect the cash.

He has been practising this fraud for the past three years and so far at least 40 employees have been cheated of Dh300,000.

The issue came to light when one of the staff discovered his leave amount missing from his account.
