Pedestrians continued to risk their lives and make wrong crossings on roads despite repeated police warnings, with nearly 4,000 such offences recorded in Abu Dhabi during March, newspapers reported on Thursday.

The offenders were caught by police and plain-clothes traffic detectives in coordination with inspectors from the municipality and fined Dh200 each.

The total value of the fines stood at Dh879,200 in March, an average 132 fines worth Dh30,000 a day.

Authorities in the emirate, mainly in the capital, have intensified inspection of roads for pedestrian offences following the completion of projects to build underpasses in most roads.
