Abu Dhabi law enforcers seized more than 18,000 fake watches, cosmetics, auto spare parts and other counterfeit products in 2012 within an ongoing campaign to protect copyrights and end market anarchy, the press reported on Tuesday.

About 6,300 of the 18,331 items confiscated included clothes and footwear while 1,813 cosmetic items, 2,655 medical products as well as gold items, CDs, electronics and thousands of other fake goods were impounded during raids on shops in the emirate.

Inspectors from the Department of Economic Development also issued 58 penalties against dealers for trade fraud.

“The penalties ranged from Dh5,000 each to closure of shops of dealers for repeating the offence,” DED’s undersecretary Mohammed Abdullah told Emirat Alyoum daily.

He said the fake items seized this year were worth around Dh1.045 million, adding that DED had received 697 complaints from consumers in the first 10 months of 2012, including 117 complaints about fraud.
