An alert shop attendant helped in the arrest of a Nigerian visitor who came to his shop twice to buy mobile phones worth more than Dh17,000 with a forged credit card.

YA, 25, visited a mobile phone shop on July 10 and wanted to buy six mobile phones worth Dh17,122. He handed over a credit card to the salesman KS, 26, an Afghan national.

“I became suspicious of the card as it did not work at the first attempt. I wanted to delay him in the shop to call the police but he quickly asked for the card and said that he will come on the next day.

“On the following day at noon, he came to the shop and asked for the same goods and handed me the same credit card, claiming that there was a problem with it which he had sorted out with the bank. He gave the card to the salesman who called the police,” he testified.

Police came and saw the salesman and some people holding the buyer. People also told police about a passport which the suspect had thrown into a box before they caught him. The accused also threw money when he was arrested. Police arrested the suspect but found nothing in his possession.

However, police found a wallet in the police car used in his arrest in addition to a Visa card beneath the vehicle. Initially, the accused denied that the wallet and the card were his but admitted later that they were his.

Two credit cards and the passport were proved to be forged.

The Court will give its verdict on November 27.
