A jobless Bangladeshi allegedly robbed a Chinese woman of her handbag containing a large sum of money while she was walking in Naif area at night, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The victim KY, 40, went down from her house at around 2am in August 2013 to go to her relative’s house in the same area to give him some things as they were planning to go for a trip on a public holiday with her son.

“I was carrying about Dh120,000 and some bank cards which I was scared to leave  in the house as I was planning to for a trip on the following day. While I was walking along a narrow unlit road behind Murshid Souq, I noticed someone walking behind me.

“Suddenly he came close to me and snatched my handbag. I tried to hold on to my bag while he was trying to grab it. After several attempts, I fell and he ran away with the bag. I got up though my knee got hurt and tried to run after him but he was faster and disappeared. Fortunately, I had my mobile in my hand, so I called my relative and he in turn called the police,” KY told investigators.

Seven months later, police learnt about the involvement of MM, 24, who comes to Murshid Souq very often, in this robbery.

Police arrested MM who denied the robbery, claiming that he had been arrested on the same day of the robbery for re-entering the country after deportation. He also claimed that the court had sentenced and deported him.

Checking his record, police found out that he was lying and had not been deported after the robbery.

The woman was asked to recognise the accused. KY recognised her attacker when shown to her via identification parades.

The court will give its sentence on August 31.
