Cabbie jailed for hiding passenger’s forgotten money

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance has awarded a taxi driver one year in jail for stealing Dh100,000 left by a passenger in the car.

A watchman who hid the amount in his accommodation has also been sentenced to one year in jail for taking stolen money.

MKH, 39, driver, and IWK, 36, watchman, - both Pakistanis - were also ordered deportation after serving their jail terms.

The  victim MO, 46, Dutch, testified that he took a taxi from a hotel on Al Riga Street to airport and he put a jacket which contained Dh100,000 on the back seat.

“As I reached the airport he got down, took his luggage bag and paid the taxi fare. As the taxi moved, I realized that I forgot the jacket in the car… I started waiving to the driver but he did not stop. I went to the airport’s Lost and Found Section and told them what happened. They connected my with Dubai Taxi who asked me not to worry but in the meantime the driver was not answering his mobile. So I went to the police station and lodged a complaint,” he testified.

Police arrested the accused who confessed to finding money in a jacket forgotten by a passenger he dropped at the airport.

He also confessed that he gave the jacket and the money to his old friend IWK. IWK confessed to hiding the jacket and the money in the electricity room of the building where he works. He also confessed that MKH told him that the later found the jacket and the money in the taxi.
